There are 60 entries on the list of events for Lubec's Fourth of July celebration, and that's only those listed as of June 13 on revision 12, available on the town website. Musical events, three parades, a first ever clambake, frog jumping contest -- participants should bring their own frog -- and of course the fireworks display, set for the evening of Sunday, July 2-- these and many more are included in the festivities. The fireworks display begins at sunset; the barge is best viewed along Johnson Street.
Three SummerKeys concerts, traditionally held Wednesday evenings at the Congregational Christian Church, bookend the schedule, but the music hardly ends there. The Lubec Area Musicians Philanthropic Society (LAMPS) hosts concerts at Stockford Park, including two listed in the celebration schedule; one, featuring Laurie Jones, will be held together with the clambake, provided by the town's Shellfish Conservation Committee, on Sunday, July 2, at 3 p.m. Other musical events are also on the line up.
Other events on July 2 include food sales from 12 to 3 p.m.; a pretty baby contest at 9:30 a.m.; junior cornhole toss at 9:30 a.m.; kids crafts and activities at 10 a.m.; cupcake decorating at 11 a.m.; children's red, white, blue star hunt at 12 p.m.; and a frog jumping contest at 12:30 p.m. All of these activities will be at the school.
On Monday, July 3, there will be a marine touch tank from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.; food sales from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; adult cornhole toss at 10:30 a.m.; and a horseshoe tournament at 1 p.m. with registration at 12:30 p.m.. These activities will be at Stockford Park.
How about those parades? All will be held Tuesday, July 4. The big one, with a theme of "Blast from the Past," will start at 1 p.m. and will follow the traditional route down Washington Street to Water Street, then back over the Main Street hill as it returns to the school. That evening is the Shirttail Parade, a usually raucous collection where just about everything goes, starting at 6 p.m. and following the same route.
Other events on July 4 include the rubber ducky race on the tide on Lubec Narrows. At the school, the carriage, trike, and bike parade will be at 9 a.m.; foot races for all ages at 10 a.m.; bubble gum and watermelon contests at 11 a.m. Also at the school, a pet show will be held at 2:30 p.m. There will food sales from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Stockford Park, and the Fundy Bay races will be from 3 to 5:30 p.m. on Johnson Bay.
Looking for a bargain? Check out the Lubec Woman's Club "Whale of a Sale" yard sale, held at the school on Monday, July 3.
In total, there are more events and more sponsoring groups than can be listed here. Head on over to the town website www.townoflubec.com
for the most up to date list. Lubec's celebration committee has been working overtime to bring all this together.
