Schoolhouse bells soon will ring in new academic year

     Summer has flown by, and it's almost time again to see backpack-carrying youngsters clad in new clothes, either waiting for the bus or walking to school. Opening days for area schools are as follows.

     The Charlotte Elementary School will hold its first day of classes on Tuesday, September 5.

     Students at the Elm Street School in East Machias start classes on Tuesday, August 29.
     Classes at the Eastport Elementary School begin on Tuesday, September 5, as do classes for Shead High School freshmen. The rest of the Shead student body returns to classes on Wednesday, September 6.

     Students at the Edmunds Consolidated School start classes on Monday, August 28.

     Lubec students in classes kindergarten through Grade 9 return to school on Tuesday, September 5. The sophomores, juniors and seniors start class the following day, September 6.

     Sophomores, juniors and seniors start classes at Machias Memorial High School on Wednesday, August 30, which is one day after the freshmen and elementary school students return to classes in Machias.

     Classes at the Pembroke Elementary School begin on Tuesday, September 5. Breakfast begins at 8:15 a.m., and classes start at 8:35 a.m.

     Tuesday, September 5, is the first day of the new school year at the Perry Elementary School.

     In School Union 102, students in Robbinston, as well as all of the students in grades K-8 and Grade 9, start school on Tuesday, September 5. Upperclassmen at Calais High School start the school year the next day, Wednesday, September 6.

     The Beatrice Rafferty School at Pleasant Point starts classes on Tuesday, August 29.

     The first day of school for new students at Washington Academy in East Machias is Wednesday, August 30, and will begin at 7:53 a.m. This will be a full day. The regular opening of school for all students is Thursday, August 31, at 7:53 a.m. Guidance director Mrs. Richmond is back at work and can be reached at 255-8301, extension 227.
The opening day of school for all students in School Union 134, including the Bay Ridge School in Cutler, the Fort O'Brien School in Machiasport and the Whiting Village School, is Wednesday, August 30.

     Tuesday, August 29, will be the orientation day for freshmen at Woodland High School in Baileyville. The rest of the secondary school students, as well as all of the Woodland Elementary School pupils, begin classes on Wednesday, August 30.

     Tuesday, September 5, is the opening day for all of the School District 10 members, including Campobello, Deer Island and Grand Manan, as well as Fundy High School in St. George.
