Summer festival season off and runnin
Marathoners are ready, set, go
by JD Rule

The seventh running of the Bay of Fundy International Marathon is set for Sunday, June 23. Organizers expect more than 1,200 visitors to Lubec and Campobello, as most runners will bring family and friends with them.
Activities will begin on Saturday, June 22, with check‑in and registration taking place in Lubec and bib pick‑up in Campobello at the Adventure Center. Early arrivers can check in Friday evening, June 21. Much of the activity on Saturday will be at the Runner's Expo at the Lubec school gymnasium or at the Herring Cove Provincial Park campground where lobster and pasta dinners will be served starting at 4 p.m. Atlantic time.
New for this year are two fun runs, one on each side of the border. In Campobello, it will be held on Saturday at 4 p.m. Atlantic time,  starting from the campground. In Lubec it will start on Sunday at 8:45 a.m. on Water Street and will include climbing the bridge as far as the border, then returning.
The ultramarathon will begin at 5:30 a.m. on Water Street, with the marathon starting at the West Quoddy Head Light at 7:10 a.m. Eastern time. First‑finishers are expected at the Water Street finish line sometime around 9:20. The half‑marathon will start at Cook's Point at 9 a.m. Atlantic time and end on Water Street. The course will close at 2 p.m. Eastern time.
Cross‑border events require preregistration, which has closed. Runners wishing to participate in the 10K can register on Saturday, as it is U.S.-only. That race begins at 9 a.m. Eastern time at the West Quoddy Head Light.
Road closures will restrict driving, and parking will be limited. The bridge will allow alternating one‑way traffic, and access to the Water Street boat ramp will be via Main and Pleasant streets, with volunteers directing the flow. There is no vehicle access to either the West Quoddy Head Light or Cook's Point starting areas; runners will be transported by bus.
Water Street will be closed on Sunday from 2 a.m. to 5 p.m. for finish line and street fair activities. The street will be crowded, and local businesses and street vendors will be open to serve visitors and residents alike. Live music will be provided much of the afternoon and into the evening.
More specific information for runners is available at the race website, <www.bayoffundymarathon.com>. The event program will be available at local business establishments and online.
