Cruise ships plan to bring 55,000 visitors to Eastport next year |

More and larger cruise ships, with passenger numbers that are more than three times the city's population, are scheduled to arrive in Eastport next year. While the visits are spread out more than during this past year, with a few in July and August, some residents and business owners are now wondering whether the small island city is hosting too many ships with too many passengers.

Area holiday giving programs provide gifts, basic necessities

The communities of Passamaquoddy Bay were gifted with kindness over the holiday as giving programs saw volunteers rallying resources together to provide toys and necessities to those who are financially struggling this year. While some programs focused on giving the means to have a special meal or something new to play with, others sought to raise donations for the most basic comforts based on the need they were seeing.

AOS board approves budget with 14% hike |

At a December 17 meeting at the Pembroke Elementary School, the AOS 77 joint school committee unanimously approved a 2025-2026 budget that is nearly 14% higher than the current budget, with increase in the amount to be raised through local taxation being just over 7%.

Two Washington County programs receive opioid recovery funding

Two organizations that serve Washington County residents -- Healthy Acadia and Day One --- have been awarded funds as part of the Maine Recovery Council's recent efforts to distribute $13.9 million to organizations involved in opioid recovery across the state. Healthy Acadia will receive $403,498, while Day One will receive $293,425. |

St. Stephen shelter for homeless opens

People without homes in St. Stephen now have a place to get out of the cold this winter. The Lighthouse Lodge opened for business in the former Masonic Hall on Main Street about a week before Christmas, with the mercury dropping to below freezing. |
