Student plans trip to India to assist villagers in poverty
by Abigail Ross

Grand Manan Community School student Harley Cary recently held a fundraiser so she could travel to India and help those in need. Islanders, including some of the best bakers on Grand Manan, came out to support Harley for this amazing trip. The fundraiser was two hours of fun and music, along with a silent auction for baked goods, which prompted some spirited bidding.
Harley says the trip is overwhelming, but it's something she has been dreaming of since Grade 8. She says Angie Russell helped her with making the trip a reality. Her sole reason for going to India is to help those in need. She says, "I want to impact people, which would impact me as well."
Harley is part of the Free the Children Organization, which arranges these Me‑To‑We trips. In India, she will be helping build a hospital or school while lugging water and digging wells for villagers living in poverty. Harley is a giver, and this trip is just one of the many ways she shows it. She has been supported in her efforts by her mother, who has helped organize fundraisers and plan for Harley's trip.
The fundraiser kicked off with Little Maisie, who sings with her big voice. It was an adorable start. Next was Brooke‑Lynn Mullen; her song was soft and light and simply beautiful. Hallie Bass and Hugh Campbell played next, and Campbell's guitar playing mixed well with Bass' lovely singing voice. Next were Bev Joy and Mitchell Brown; their song had a great western tune to it. Liam, Caleb and Dan pumped up the crowd a bit with two songs in a row.
Jerusha and Caleb Richardson were next with a mashup of "All of Me" by John Legend and "I Want It That Way" by the Backstreet Boys. It was a wonderful husband and wife duet love song C and they dedicated the song to the chocolate turtle cheesecake that they sadly didn't win. Harley was part of her own event and sang "Riptide." She plays the song on the ukulele, and her voice fit the song perfectly. Van Worthen followed after Harley with a classic country song, "People Get Ready," by Rod Stewart. He sang it really well. For the final number, Bev Joy and Mitchell Brown came out again and closed the show with "Hurt" as performed by Johnny Cash. It was very good, and a great last song for the show.
