Marriage right for same-sex couples passes
 by Susan Esposito

In a historic vote in the November 6 election, Maine residents approved same-sex marriage, by the same margin that the state's voters had repealed a gay marriage law three years ago. Supporters of same-sex marriage won with 53% of the vote statewide and 47% against the measure. Washington County voters were more conservative, with 59% voting against the referendum and 41% voting for it. Maine joined Maryland and Washington in being the first states to extend marriage rights to same-sex couples by popular vote.
The majority of Mainers who flocked to the polls voted for Barack Obama, elected a former governor to fill Olympia Snowe's U.S. Senate seat and returned both incumbent representatives to the U.S. House. They also elected Democratic majorities to the Maine Senate and House, ending the Republican control that had been gained two years ago for the first time in almost 40 years.
Statewide, the president received 56% of the votes, and Republican challenger Mitt Romney received 41%, with 98% of Maine precincts reporting. The race was a little closer in Washington County, where the president received 49% of the vote, and Mitt Romney garnered 48%. In the rest of the country, the president received 50% of the popular vote and Romney received 48%.
Independent Angus King received 53% of Maine votes to win the U.S. Senate seat over Republican Charles Summers, who received 31%, and Democrat Cynthia Dill with 13%. In Washington County, 44% voted for King, while Summers received 38% of the vote and Dill 15%.
Voters in District 2 reelected Democratic incumbent Michael Michaud over his Republican challenger Kevin Raye, by a margin of 58% to 42%. A Washington County native, Raye received more support there, where 61% of the votes were cast for him and only 39% for Michaud.
In District 1, Democrat Chellie Pingree retained her seat in the U.S. House of Representatives with 65% of the votes. Her challenger, Republican Jonathan Courtney, garnered 35%.
In the Maine Senate District 29 race, Republican David Burns won with 43% of the vote. Democrat Anne Perry received 38% and James Whalen, an independent, garnered 19% of the votes.
Republican Lawrence Lockman defeated Democrat Dennis Mahar by a margin of 51% to 49% in a close race for the Maine House District 30 seat. Lockman won by 84 votes, according to unofficial tallies.
Republican incumbent Joyce Maker defeated Democrat Harold Clark, 62% to 38%, to win the Maine House District 31 seat.
Democrat Katherine Cassidy won the race for the seat in Maine House District 32, defeating Republican Michael Radeka by a margin of 58% to 42%.
Republican Peter Doak defeated Democrat Lawrence Finnegan, 58% to 42%, to win the District 33 House seat.
With 98% of the precincts reporting, the higher education bond was voted down by 51% of Mainers versus 49% for it. The numbers were not as close in Washington County, where it was rejected by 57% and only approved by 43%.
Mainers approved of the conservation bond 61% to 39%, and it was also popular in Washington County with 52% for and 48% against it.
The transportation bond was very popular, and 72% of voters approved it statewide, and only 28% voted against it. Washington County results almost mirrored the statewide numbers -- 71% for and 29% against.
Voters statewide also approved the water systems bond, by 63% to 37%. It was also favored in Washington County, 57% for and 43%. against.
The voting results from area towns follow.
