Eastport man charged with felony assault
by Susan Esposito

A 30-year-old Eastport man was charged with three felonies after a standoff with law enforcement officers on December 2 in Pembroke.
As a result of a domestic altercation between him and his ex-girlfriend in the early morning hours that day, Jonathan C. Chevrier was arrested for gross sexual assault, kidnapping and elevated aggravated assault by Washington County Sheriff's Department deputies, Pleasant Point Police Department and Eastport Police Department officers. The agencies were assisted by Border Patrol agents.
According to Chief Deputy Christopher Donahue of the sheriff's department, the Regional Communications Center received a 911 call at approximately 2:59 a.m. from the victim reporting that her ex-boyfriend, Chevrier, had broken into her apartment at Pleasant Point and was now fighting with another male subject there. After allegedly being assaulted, the male victim was able to escape with what appeared to be minor injuries. The victim did have an active protection from abuse order in place.
Chevrier, who was armed with a knife, then forced the victim and her 18-month-old child to go with him, according to Donahue. He drove them to the Boyden's Lake boat landing, where it's alleged that she was brutally attacked. She was repeatedly assaulted both in and out of the vehicle, thrown into the lake and then sexually assaulted by Chevrier. He then drove the mother and child to his mother's residence in the Pembroke area, where police caught up with them and, after a brief standoff, were able to take Chevrier into custody.
The victim was taken from the scene to the Calais Regional Hospital.
Chevrier remains in custody at the Washington County Jail and further charges may be pending. His first court appearance is unknown at this time but is expected in the next few days.
