Dana is tribe's first elected female chief
by Edward French

The first elected female Passamaquoddy chief will begin her four-year term on October 1. In the September 18 general election at Sipayik, Marla Dana received 205 votes, defeating by a 21-vote margin Colleen Dana-Cummings, who received 184. Dana will be the tribe's first female elected chief, although Vera Francis, who had been elected as vice chief, served as chief for a short period after being appointed by the tribal council following the recall of Fred Moore III in November 2016.
This is also the first time in Passamaquoddy history that the tribe has had a female chief and vice chief, as Elizabeth "Maggie" Dana was reelected vice chief at Sipayik, receiving 238 votes to 148 for Mark E. Altvater.
For the tribal representative to the legislature position, write-in candidate Rena Newell received a total of 328 votes from Sipayik and Indian Township, defeating Madonna Soctomah, who garnered 266 votes. Newell, who is from Sipayik, will replace Matthew Dana II of Indian Township, with the tribe alternating which reservation the representative is from.
Also in the Sipayik election five nominated candidates, along with some write-in candidates, were running for three positions on the tribal council. Elected were incumbent Janelle Sapiel, who received 276 votes, Pos Bassett, who received 126, and Denise Altvater, who was a write-in candidate and garnered 117. She narrowly defeated Eunice Francis, who received 115 votes. A recount held on September 24 confirmed those tallies. Others who received votes included Holly Cleaves, 59 votes; Eddie Nicholas, 53; Gerald Barnes Sr., 41; Deborah Georgantis, 40; and Alonzo Francis, 21.
Carol Taylor-Sprague and Francis Cleaves were elected to three-year terms on the school board, with each receiving 268 votes.
A total of 392 votes were cast, for a voter turnout of 58%.

Indian Township results
In the September 5 general election at Indian Township, William Nicholas was reelected chief, with 239 votes, defeating Richard Sabattus I, who received 158. Darrell Newell was elected vice chief with 219 votes, besting the incumbent, Leslie Nicholas, who garnered 173.
A total of 13 candidates ran for three open council seats. Elected were Elizabeth Neptune with 162 votes, Alexander Nicholas I with 138 and Sonja Dana with 123. Also running were Roger Brown, 73 votes; Lisa Cox, 71; Aaron Dana, 78; Nora Deschaine, 96; Jevon Dore, 56; Dean Francis, 34; Janet Lola, 69; Wayne Newell, 37; Regina Petit, 27; and Nipawset Sabattus, 120.
For the tribal representative, write-in Rena Newell received 163 votes and Madonna Soctomah garnered 106. A total of 400 ballots were cast, for a voter turnout of 77%.
